gorgeous. If they fall asleep in the snow, will they freeze?

If they were to lay down and not be able to get up, then yes, it’s possible for them to freeze. But, healthy horses can sleep outside in the cold without problem. My Girls have very thick winter coats, so they rarely get cold, and when it’s too cold for them, they go into their shelter, which has a thick bedding of straw for them to stay warm in. 🙂

  3. Ah, to be able to doze whenever, wherever. My cats are masters of that, too.

  4. Beautiful horses. Stupid question here, I’m sure – do horses sleep mostly standing up/down or both?

Not a stupid question at all!
      Short answer is…both.
They can and will doze standing up happily, but a healthy horse needs at least 30 minutes of r.e.m sleep a day. They can only get that if they lay down.
They’ll lay down when they feel safe in their home, so it’s a good sign when I see my Girls laying flat out in the sunshine…like cats, they *love* to sun themselves!
If horses don’t lay down to sleep, they can become sleep deprived. Think cranky 1200lb toddler…not fun at all.
