Choosing a farm name is never easy. It’s like naming a baby…whatever you choose, you’re stuck with. Especially once you put the name out there. It’s your representation of who you are, as a farmer. It’s the “face” of your reputation as a farmer. Your farm name defines you.
So, we wanted to choose something that was “us”. We wanted something that sounded good, that looked good on paper, that had meaning. At least to us, anyways. 😉
Calico has always been a part of what we wanted to name the farm.
For 3 reasons:
- 1. Calico cats. As in The Stinky Rotten Calico, with the pretty face, but bad, bad attitude. This represents The Kid.
- 2. Calico fabric. Since my main job-aside from farming now!-is sewing, calico also represents the fabric. This one is me, of course.
- 3. Calico cats, due to their mottling, have the perfect camouflage. Our SRC can hide very effectively, using her coat pattern to blend in. Like a hunter. Like Hubby. So calico as camo, represents him.
We tossed around a lot of different names and ideas…for a while we were pretty set on White Calico Ranch. But it just wasn’t quite right. One night, during our month of moving-thank goodness for long closings, and possession overlaps!!-driving home from the city, The Kid dozing in the back seat of the truck, I looked at Hubby and said “How could we have ever done this without Midnight?” Midnight, of course, is our truck.
That’s when inspiration hit…Midnight Calico…but then what? Ranch? I love the flow of “Midnight Calico Ranch”…but…and this is a pretty big one! “Midnight Calico Ranch” makes me think of The Bunny Ranch. Yeah, so, y’know, having our farm name sound like a brothel was not what we wanted…
That when we decided Midnight Calico Farm was our name. We woke The Kid, as we turned onto our road, to tell her. Expecting excitement, we got a snorted “Yeah, okay” and back to sleep. I took it as a good sign. 🙂
Now, I’m just working on designing the logo. Then I want to have t-shirts and hoodies made with our farm name and logo on them, they will be offered for sale, for anyone interested in them.
